Bowling Green, KY - Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) has announced the winners of the Congressional App Challenge from Kentucky's Second District. The winners were selected from a pool of talented high school and middle school students who participated in the competition.

Taking home the overall first place prize is a team from Barren County High School consisting of Carlie Sanders, Sara Thorpe, and Leah Somerville. Their app, called "ACHE," impressed the judges with its innovative design and functionality.

In a statement, Congressman Guthrie expressed his pride in the winners, saying, "I am proud to announce that Barren County High School students Carlie Sanders, Sara Thorpe, and Leah Somerville are Kentucky's Second District's Congressional App Challenge winners. The Congressional App Challenge gives students the opportunity to showcase what they have learned in computer science. I am proud to host this competition each year to inspire students to advance their coding skills and their interest in computer science careers through friendly competition."

Guthrie also acknowledged the efforts of all the participants and the support from educators and judges in the Second District. He congratulated all the high school and middle school students who took part in the 2023 Congressional App Challenge.

The winners were chosen by a panel of local computer science experts. The winning app, ACHE, will be displayed on the U.S. House of Representatives' website along with other winning apps from across the country. It is also eligible to be displayed in the U.S. Capitol, showcasing the talent and creativity of these young students.

As part of their victory, the team from Barren County High School will be invited to join the #HouseofCode Capitol Hill reception in Washington D.C., where they will have the opportunity to meet and celebrate with app challenge winners from other congressional districts.
