U.S. Senator Rand Paul has formally requested information from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) regarding allegations that a FEMA official instructed employees to withhold disaster assistance from supporters of President-elect Donald Trump. The request was made in a letter addressed to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and FEMA Administrator Deanne Criswell.
The allegations concern actions taken by a FEMA official in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, where federal employees were reportedly directed to avoid providing aid to homes displaying political signs supporting Trump. Similar instructions are alleged to have been given during Hurricane Helene's response efforts in North Carolina.
Senator Paul expressed concerns about these reports, stating they "raise serious questions about FEMA’s ability to impartially administer disaster relief to Americans." He acknowledged the swift termination of the employee involved but emphasized that this might not be an isolated incident.
The letter requests comprehensive records related to these incidents, including communications involving FEMA employee Marn’i Washington, employment status details, and any internal or external reports on the matter. Additionally, it seeks information on any other instances of politically motivated discrimination by FEMA or DHS employees since November 2022.
Paul's inquiry underscores the need for transparency and fairness in administering disaster relief funds appropriated by Congress. The deadline for providing the requested information is set for November 26, 2024.
