U.S. Senators Rand Paul and Mike Lee have introduced the Protecting Life in Foreign Assistance Act to prevent foreign aid from being used to fund or promote abortions overseas. Senator Paul emphasized, "No taxpayer dollar should be used to fund abortion overseas," while Senator Lee highlighted the importance of valuing the lives of both the unborn and their mothers.

The legislation aims to build upon the Mexico City Policy, which was first implemented by President Ronald Reagan in 1984 to restrict family planning foreign assistance funds from supporting organizations that provide or advocate for abortions abroad. The bill seeks to permanently establish an expanded version of the Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance policy into law, encompassing all forms of assistance to foreign or domestic nonprofits, NGOs, and multilateral organizations.

With the recent rescinding of the Protecting Life in Global Health Assistance policy by President Biden in 2021, there are concerns that American taxpayers could inadvertently contribute to funding overseas abortions through foreign assistance programs. The introduction of this legislation is a response to ensure that taxpayer money does not support abortions abroad and to uphold the sanctity of unborn human lives globally.

A coalition of Republican senators including Marsha Blackburn, Mike Braun, Tom Cotton, Marco Rubio, and others have cosponsored the bill, demonstrating a unified effort to protect the dignity of life and prevent the use of U.S. funds for abortion services outside the country.

The Protecting Life in Foreign Assistance Act seeks to address the sensitive issue of abortion funding in foreign aid and reflects the ongoing debate surrounding the allocation of taxpayer money for such purposes.
