WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), Ranking Member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, along with Senators Rick Scott (R-FL), Ron Johnson (R-WI), and Roger Marshall (R-KS), members of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, have sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In the letter, they urge him to immediately rescind the appointments of James Clapper, John Brennan, and Paul Kolbe to the newly formed Homeland Intelligence Experts Group. These individuals are known for spreading disinformation and have falsely claimed that the abandoned laptop of Joe Biden’s son was "Russian disinformation."
The senators are demanding answers on how these appointments were made and have called attention to the fact that these individuals have a history of spreading lies and disinformation. Senator Paul stated, "The decision to assign individuals known to spread lies and disinformation to a committee intended to advance the intelligence and national security efforts of our country shows the depths of your agency’s, and this administration’s, disrespect for the American people."
In their letter, the senators highlight the false claims made by Clapper, Brennan, and Kolbe during the 2020 election. They assert that these individuals acted in coordination with the political campaign of then-candidate Joe Biden to discredit the legitimacy of the discovery of Hunter Biden’s laptop, which contained incriminating information. The senators argue that their actions amounted to blatant election interference.
The letter also points out the previous misconduct of James Clapper, who lied under oath to the United States Senate in 2013 to hide the National Security Agency’s spying operations on Americans. Despite proof of Clapper's perjury and the NSA's mass surveillance coming to light, he has been appointed by President Joe Biden and Secretary Mayorkas to serve on the Homeland Intelligence Experts Group.
The senators demand that DHS immediately rescind the appointments of these individuals and request documents and communications related to the establishment of the Homeland Intelligence Experts Group, the selection process of its members, and information regarding their compensation and access to classified information. They emphasize the importance of ensuring that the guidance and recommendations of the group respect American civil liberties.
The senators also plan to urge Chairman Gary Peters to demand Secretary Mayorkas's appearance before the Committee in a hearing to explain the appointments of these individuals despite their disreputable records of deceit.
