WKU Women’s Tennis lost 4-3 to Sam Houston on Apr. 15 in the first round of the 2026 Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship at the Adams Tennis Complex in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.

The match was closely contested, with WKU starting strong by winning the doubles point thanks to victories from Virginia Madueño and Emily Schut, as well as Isabelle Einess and Elizabeth Sobieski. In singles play, Ariadna Fernandez and Sobieski earned wins at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions respectively, but Sam Houston ultimately secured enough points for victory.

Head Coach Greg Davis said, “What a great college tennis match. It’s the only match where we’ve won the doubles point and lost the match. It came down to the end, and those are always 50-50 matches. Give Sam Houston credit. They pulled it out and won the last put. I’m real proud of how our team fought back. We were down 3-2, got back in it here and put ourselves back in position. At the end of the day, that’s all you can ask for – put yourself in a position to be successful.”

The Lady Toppers finish their season with an overall record of 11-14 but achieved several program milestones this year: they have now won at least ten matches for five consecutive seasons—a feat previously accomplished between 2009-2013—and set a new program record with 73 wins over that five-year span.

Individually, Madueño finished her freshman year with a notable singles record of 16-5 across multiple positions; her win total ties for fifth-most in a single season for WKU freshmen behind Rachel Hermanova’s record set in 2022. Schut ended her career tied for eleventh-most doubles wins (25) alongside Olga Kosaka from earlier years.

Davis concludes his eighth season as head coach at WKU with a total of 89 wins—second most in program history—and currently has amassed 348 career victories as a collegiate head coach.
