WKU Women’s Tennis secured a 4-2 victory over Middle Tennessee on Apr. 9, closing out the regular season at the Warren County Tennis Facility at Michael O. Buchanon Park in Bowling Green.

The match marked Senior Day for WKU, with Carolina Chiatti and Elizabeth Sobieski honored before play began. The Lady Toppers finished the regular season with an overall record of 11-13 and a Conference USA record of 2-2.

WKU claimed the doubles point with wins from Emily Schut/Virginia Madueño and Ariadna Fernandez/Barbara Olvera. In singles, Madueño, Olvera, and Fernandez each won their matches to secure the team victory over Middle Tennessee (6-14 overall, 1-6 CUSA). Head Coach Greg Davis said about the win: “We’ve been working hard and we kept getting closer and closer throughout the season. I knew our best match was out there. We hadn’t played it yet, and we played it on Senior Day, which was nice to see.”

Senior Elizabeth Sobieski reflected on her experience by saying: “I think the biggest thing is just to compete with really great girls. That’s kind of been the takeaway for me. Tennis is such an individual sport, but to put 6-8 girls on the court together is such an experience and I’m so grateful that I’ve been able to do it and do it here where we’re supported and cheered for almost every day.” Fellow senior Carolina Chiatti added: “This has been a pleasure. Even though I’m not playing, just being on the bench, I feel like on the court. I get so excited and I’m like, ‘Yes, let’s go!’ So it’s just amazing to watch them. They play so good together. There’s just amazing energy and amazing chemistry, too. It’s just such a blessing to be here at Western and finish my degree here.”

The Lady Toppers have now won nine home matches this season—the fourth-most in program history—and are undefeated when winning doubles points this year (8-0). The team has achieved at least ten wins in each of the last five seasons.

Looking ahead, WKU Women’s Tennis will participate in next week’s Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship in Murfreesboro starting April 15.
