WKU Women’s Tennis freshman Virginia Madueño was named the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week, according to an April 8 announcement from the conference.
The recognition highlights Madueño’s strong performance this season and her impact as a first-year player for Western Kentucky University. The award is given weekly to standout athletes in Conference USA women’s tennis.
“We’re very proud of Virginia getting conference Player of the Week,” WKU Women’s Tennis Head Coach Greg Davis said. “She’s done a tremendous job this year as a freshman for us. Usually as freshmen, I like to play them a little bit lower. She’s kind of gotten thrown into the deep end up playing No. 3 right now and we’re very proud of her accomplishments.”
Madueño improved her singles record to 15-4 after two wins last week at the No. 3 position, defeating Campbellsville’s Valentina Curli and Austin Peay’s Luca Bohlen in straight sets. She holds a 5-1 record at No. 3 singles, along with undefeated records at both No. 4 (6-0) and No. 5 (4-1) positions this spring.
Her total of 15 singles victories ties for sixth-most in program history for a single season and ranks second among true freshmen at WKU for most singles wins in one year.
In doubles play, Madueño teamed with Emily Schut last week to win both matches at the No. 1 position, bringing their partnership record to an even split this season and increasing Madueño’s overall doubles wins tally to nine.
This is Lady Topper Tennis’ second weekly award this season; earlier, Madueño and Barbara Olvera were recognized as CUSA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week on Feb. 4. Under Davis’ leadership, WKU has received twelve CUSA weekly awards so far.
The Lady Toppers currently hold a record of ten wins and thirteen losses going into Thursday’s Senior Day match against Middle Tennessee at Michael O. Buchanon Park.
