In a recent op-ed published in The Washington Times, Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02) discussed the impact of the Biden-Harris administration's Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) on Medicare premiums and drug costs for seniors.
Guthrie highlighted that since the passage of the IRA, seniors have faced increased financial burdens with fewer options available under Medicare Part D plans. He noted, "Two years following the passage of the IRA, seniors are still struggling, and it’s only gotten worse. Seniors are paying more now for fewer options than they had before the law was enacted." He further elaborated that there are now half as many Part D plans available compared to when the program launched in 2006, with 100 fewer plans this year than last year.
The congressman pointed out that premiums have significantly increased since President Biden took office. "In 2020, Part D monthly premiums had actually gone down to $30.00. But since President Biden took office in 2021, Part D premiums have increased by 57 percent, with more on the way," he stated.
Guthrie also emphasized the real-world consequences of these policy decisions for seniors: "This year, seniors saw premium increases of 21 percent, including up to a 57 percent increase in Harris’ home state of California. In 2025, those premiums are expected to go up at least an additional 50 percent."
