U.S. Senators Rand Paul and JD Vance, along with fifteen colleagues, have demanded answers from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Shalanda Young regarding American aid to Ukraine. The lawmakers expressed their concerns after new data revealed that previous OMB totals significantly underestimated the price tag of Ukraine aid.

According to a statement released by the lawmakers, they had estimated US spending in connection with the Ukraine conflict to be at least $114 billion in January 2023. This estimate was higher than the figures provided by OMB in September 2023 and contradicted the lower amount cited by National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan later that month. The lawmakers now have confirmation from OMB that the total Ukraine spending figure is much higher than previously admitted.

The OMB's latest transmission disclosed that there is an additional $684 million in appropriated Ukraine spending that was not previously reported by the administration. Furthermore, there is an extra $900 million in Department of Defense (DOD) assistance that should be included in the total Ukraine aid figure. The new data also indicates that the administration has over $4 billion in authority remaining to transfer weapons from US stocks to Ukraine, with recent transfers in March depleting stocks and necessitating another $10 billion to replenish them. This brings the total amount of assistance given to Ukraine by the administration to more than $125 billion, with the potential to exceed $129 billion.

The lawmakers' letter to OMB Director Shalanda Young emphasized the need for transparency and accuracy in reporting the true cost of American aid to Ukraine. The full letter can be accessed on Senator Rand Paul's official website.

The revelations from the OMB data have sparked concerns among lawmakers, prompting calls for further investigation and accountability in the handling of Ukraine aid. The discrepancies in the reported figures have raised questions about the administration's transparency and decision-making processes regarding foreign assistance.
