U.S. Senator Rand Paul, along with Senators Rick Scott, Ron Johnson, and Roger Marshall, has sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, urging him to immediately rescind the appointments of James Clapper, John Brennan, and Paul Kolbe to the newly formed Homeland Intelligence Experts Group. These individuals have been accused of spreading disinformation regarding the abandoned laptop of Joe Biden's son.
The letter states that Clapper, Brennan, and Kolbe acted at the direction of the political campaign of then-candidate Joe Biden to assert, without evidence, that the laptop and its incriminating information were "Russian disinformation." The senators argue that this false statement was intended to discredit the legitimacy of the laptop's discovery and to ignore the alleged criminality and corruption of Hunter Biden and Joe Biden.
The letter further highlights the past actions of James Clapper, who lied under oath to the United States Senate in 2013 to hide the National Security Agency's spying operations on millions of Americans. Despite proof of his perjury, Clapper has been appointed to serve on the Homeland Intelligence Experts Group.
The senators demand that the appointments of Clapper, Brennan, and Kolbe be rescinded immediately and also request documents and communications related to the establishment of the Homeland Intelligence Experts Group. They also seek information about the selection process of the group's members and their compensation packages, among other inquiries.
The senators plan to urge Chairman Gary Peters to demand Secretary Mayorkas' appearance before the Committee in a hearing to explain the appointments.
The Department of Homeland Security has not yet responded to the letter, but the senators have requested a response from Secretary Mayorkas by October 5, 2023.
The controversy surrounding the appointments to the Homeland Intelligence Experts Group reflects the ongoing concerns about the spread of disinformation and the credibility of individuals in positions of power. The senators' demand for answers and transparency underscores the importance of upholding truth and accountability in matters of national security and intelligence.
