As the 2023 general assembly passed a new law allowing public school systems in Kentucky to hire non-graduates for classified positions, schools in South Central Kentucky are welcoming applicants regardless of their high school education.
"Many people out there possess skills that you wouldn’t pick up in a traditional setting so a change like this would be helpful in diversifying the staff," said CheyAnne Fant, Director of Nutrition Services & After School Programs in Barren County.
Gary Fields, Superintendent of the Bowling Green Independent School District, said they’ve noticed applicants over the summer that don’t have their diploma or GED. He noted that not only do you receive the benefits of employment, but you’re also able to get your GED through the institution through which you are employed and some of those individuals have taken advantage of that.
The new law is aimed to address staffing issues in places like the cafeteria and on the bus. Schools in south central Kentucky are hoping that the news will spread, so they can continue to welcome applicants with no high school diploma or GED.
