Senator Rand Paul has recently addressed the security failures surrounding the incident in Butler, Pennsylvania, through a series of posts on social media. The senator’s comments focus on the performance of the United States Secret Service (USSS) and highlight his efforts to bring attention to what he describes as significant lapses in security protocol.

On July 13, 2025, Senator Paul stated, “What happened in Butler, Pennsylvania, was not just a tragedy—it was a scandal. The United States Secret Service failed to act on credible intelligence, failed to coordinate with local law enforcement, and failed to prevent an attack that nearly took the life of a then-former”. In this post, he criticized the USSS for not responding adequately to available intelligence and for insufficient coordination with local authorities during the event.

In another post on July 13, 2025, Senator Paul announced the release of his report examining these failures: “My report on the USSS failures is in. Read it here https://t.co/Wfvj4IDsaM”. He provided a link for readers to access the full document detailing his findings.

Later that day, Senator Paul reflected on the anniversary of the incident and reiterated concerns about accountability: “A year ago today, the tragic security failure left many without consequences. I exposed these failures in my report. The people entrusted with @POTUS’s safety can’t afford slip-ups. No excuses. We must ensure it never happens again. This week’s fight: massive government waste.” In this message, he emphasized the importance of preventing future incidents and linked his investigation into government inefficiency more broadly.

Additional information for Step 3: The Butler, Pennsylvania incident refers to an attempted attack targeting a former U.S. president during a public appearance in July 2024. No fatalities occurred; however, there were injuries among attendees and concerns raised about gaps in security planning by federal agencies.
