Rand Paul announces support for gun records bill and calls to abolish education department

Senator Rand Paul, a U.S. Senator from Kentucky and chair of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs, announced his support for new legislative efforts targeting federal gun record retention and called for the abolition of the Department of Education in a series of posts on April 17, 2026.

In one post, Paul stated, “I’ve signed onto the No Retaining Every Gun in a System That Restricts Your Rights Act to halt ATF record collection from closed dealers, destroy existing records within 90 days, ban future hoarding, & require reporting on deletions. This is another way I am fighting to preserve” (April 17, 2026). He also shared a link in a subsequent tweet: https://t.co/75tdIqVvHo (April 17, 2026).

Later that day, Paul posted about his position on federal education policy: “Abolish the Department of Education. Please, please, please. https://t.co/4NCcHx70pP” (April 17, 2026).

According to his official website, Paul advocates for privacy and civil liberties while promoting domestic energy production and national security. He assists Kentucky residents with federal government matters and has founded the Southern Kentucky Lions Eye Clinic to provide essential eye care services. In addition to his legislative work, he performs pro-bono eye surgeries both in Kentucky and abroad as part of international medical missions (source). Paul holds a medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine and specializes in ophthalmology.
