Congressman Brett Guthrie, Chairman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, and Congressman Richard Hudson, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, announced on May 28 a hearing titled “Where Are We?: Examining Positioning, Navigation, and Timing Capabilities in the United States.”
Guthrie and Hudson said, “The U.S. Global Positioning System (GPS) underlies critical technologies Americans use and rely on every day, but many people may not realize GPS applications extend far beyond the map apps on their phones. From national defense and critical infrastructure, such as banking and energy, to the daily routines of nearly every American, even a temporary GPS outage would drastically affect hundreds of millions of lives. We look forward to a conversation about how we can strengthen positioning, navigation, and timing services to maximize resiliency and reliability.”
The Subcommittee on Communications & Technology will hold this hearing at 10:15 AM ET on Thursday, June 4 in Room 2123 of the Rayburn House Office Building. The event is open to both the public and press with a livestream available online at energycommerce.house.gov.
The House Energy and Commerce Committee focuses on legislation concerning energy policy, health care issues including Medicare reform efforts since 1965 amendments creating Medicaid programs; environmental protection measures; telecommunications oversight such as broadband deployment; consumer protection matters like pharmaceutical pricing reforms; as well as broader commerce topics impacting Americans’ daily lives, according to the official website. The committee traces its origins back to 1795 when it was established as the Committee on Commerce and Manufactures.
